Upcoming PC upgrade

Recommended Posts

Guest Zenith

My venerable laptop is now 4 years old and while it is still a capable everyday machine, it is starting to strain with some games.

I'm looking to get a replacement PC between now and New Year and wanted to ask the good people of Epic what they would consider a decent system for £600. I'm after a machine that will be able to play Mass Effect 3 smooth as glass when it comes out next spring.

I'm happy to self-build. I'm just out of practice with the component market currently and need some advice of what is considered good for CPU, mobo, RAM etc.

Well at the moment your looking at Intel's Sandy bridge stuff so a 2500k or 2600k. If your not an overclocker by a non K to save some bucks.

Motherboard depends if you choose sandybridge. Gigabyte and Asus are big players here. You want to go for the z68 or p67 chipset.

Ram pretty much your own preference but 8gb is the norm and DDR3 is used every where in new set ups. Sandybridge uses dual channel.

If your just replacing CPU/Ram/Mobo then £600 should build you a solid rig. If you start by finding what you want then I can advise you from there.

if you want a mobo that works well and has none of the fancy crap, then get a gigiabyte. solid boards and do the job.

if you also need a GPU then get an nVidia 460 or 560. the 560 is just a newer version of the 460 with some upgrades. both are priced extremely well and are powerful.

Had nothing but trouble from Gigashite boards.

560 uses a revised Fermi core and runs cooler uses less power. 560 Ti are pretty nice cards. Are you looking at any particular form factor?

Me and a mate are attending the Cardiff CS:GO qualifiers. Looking to join a team that needs 2 x mercs.

We've been playing since 1.6 on and off, are part of an online team, and are usually rank LE+

epic24 seems so long ago and I haven't been back since. Having taken the 3v3 Rocket League tournament, I'm hungry for more.

      And so...

I have plans to return to epic27 with a new team behind me! I am incredibly excited as epic24 was my first taste of a LAN and I loved every minute of it. It's completely worth the 700 miles round trip and I'm ready to do it all over again!
