Laptop install partition

Hi

Does anyone know how to repair one of these (or if its possible)

Got an old Packard Bell from a friend that needs a re-install, but i cant get the hidden partition to load.

It appears to be there and working, cause it tries to run a Windows repair, so must be getting the files from it.

Are you pressing F11 at the BIOS boot screen to go to the recovery program?

That's the usual default button to get into PB laptops.

If that doesn't work, you have 3 options.

1) Get in touch with PB and get a set of recovery discs for that model sent out. There's usually a charge for this.

2) Forget about the hidden recovery and blitz the disc with a Windows setup CD, using the OEM code on the underside. As long as the Windows versions are the same, you should be able to activate it without too much trouble.

3) Install a version of linux. Not meant as a serious option (sorry Gotenxiao!). :)

Yeah i have tried with F11 and Alt-F10 (which the newer machines apparently use)

Neither is working. Checked the BIOS and the options is turned on in there.

If i get into Windows the PB software is there, but it wont run the recovery from windows either and if i try to create a DVD (the estimated 40 minutes) results in nothing happening for 4 hours.

1. PB want £51 for a recovery CD - behave, a full copy of Windows aint much more, with a new license key

2. I was hoping to blitz it, but i dont have a copy of 32bit Vista to hand

3. Linux is a black art to me. every attempt i have ever made to install it has failed.

Even I can install Linux?? Getting it to do what I want, however, is a whole different level! :?

Well I managed to access the recovery partition in the end by starting the process from Windows in safe mode. Unfortunately after it formatted the drive it decided the recovery data was corrupt, crapped out and now refuses to boot at all.

So as soon as I get a copy of Vista, it'll be getting formatted and installed properly.

Thanks for the help
