10 Cloverfield Lane

Recommended Posts

OK, admission time. I've never watched the original Cloverfield in one sitting. I went to see it in a theater but due to the (queue tirade of swear words) ***** ***** ***** ********* use of hand-held cameras and constant jerky movement made me physically sick. I had to leave theater before I threw up. I watched the last 30 mins of the film cam download (hey JJ, if you want to shoot a film with crappy camcorders and make me sick, I'll watch it from a crappy camcorder download) and thought it was absolute cobblers.

If I know a movie is being shot with hand-held, 1st person cameras is being released I won't go and watch it. Blair Witch, Cloverfield and the absolutely terrible Paranormal Activity series.

Hey! There is something moving downstairs in the middle of the night in an American house. Do you:

A) Grab the gun you have stashed under the bed to scare off the bad guys?
B) Grab the baseball bat you have next to the bedroom door?
C) Phone the Police .... who doesn't have a mobile next to their bed these days?
D) Do the British thing and run naked downstairs screaming like a banshee?*
E) Get your camcorder and slowly creep downstairs filming everything?

*That's just me ... bet it'd scare the bejesus out of anyone creeping around my house!
[/Gripe]

I digress.

Skip forward to 10 Cloverfield Lane.

I had already read that I wasn't to expect Cloverfield 2 ... thank goodness for that. It gets the JJ "Kelvin" reference out of the way early (I'm glad as it meant I wasn't looking for it later on) and although there is no dialogue, it's not hard to work out what's going on.

Then it starts to get dark, very dark and for the most part, is set in John Goodman's fallout bunker. I will admit to watching some of the movie gripping the sides of my chair as Goodman's character walks a fine line between a genuine good-guy and absolute psycho. It was, for me, a geniune edge-of-the-seat thriller that I enjoyed watching. I won't spoil the end but it wasn't what I was expecting.

4 stars from me.

I have seen the ads and thought it looked ok

Then I sat down and had a talk with myself and said Beej, Cloverfield was absolute gash, this will be worse

I now think I may have to watch this!

Yes, there is a Cloverfield link but as I said, it's not Cloverfield 2. It's a thriller with a link to Cloverfield and, IMO, worth watching.

epic24 seems so long ago and I haven't been back since. Having taken the 3v3 Rocket League tournament, I'm hungry for more.

      And so...

I have plans to return to epic27 with a new team behind me! I am incredibly excited as epic24 was my first taste of a LAN and I loved every minute of it. It's completely worth the 700 miles round trip and I'm ready to do it all over again!
